The freight market lacked overall clear direction during the past two weeks, with Atlantic freight rates higher on most routes and Pacific freight rates generally lower, particularly for capes. Freight brokers and analysts say the market is seeing a typical correction, whereby the stronger market tends to attract vessels over a period of time. Once the demand is absorbed, the build-up of vessels becomes a surplus and even a few ships extra to demand makes a considerable difference to the rates which can be achieved and they fall. Vessels are then attracted to the other market and the cycle begins again, they said, and this, in simple terms, is what is happening between the Atlantic and Pacific freight markets.
