Indian buying activity has picked up in the last two weeks with enquiries out by at least four industrial consumers amounting to a possible total of around 0.6mt, with at least 0.3mt exclusively for South African material. This adds to the huge increase in South African demand seen since the beginning of the year with industrial outfits looking towards South Africa to replace requirement increasingly serviced by Chinese suppliers over the last two years. Sources believe that in February alone between 0.75mt and 1mt of material will be exported from Richards Bay to India. Last year 2.67mt was shipped to India, against 3.46mt in 2005. Last year Chinese shipments to India were 4.63mt against 3.25mt the previous year.
