German thermal coal imports rebound in July

Stock building by utilities caused a surge of thermal coal importsinto Germany in July.Customs data show imports jumped 40% to 2.30 mt in July,compared with 1.64 mt in July last year, and by 16% from 1.98 mtin June this year.The rise follows weaker imports in the first half of the year. Oneutility/trader source close to the situation suggested that Germancoal-fired power plants have learnt lessons from last year when acombination of low coal stocks at the Amsterdam-RotterdamAntwerp (ARA) terminals and low water levels on the river networkin late summer resulted in supply disruptions for coal plants.
