Foundation output dips in Q2; net income increases

US producer Foundation Coal had a relatively solid Q2 performance against a backdrop of weak coal demand and high domestic inventories. Q2 coal sales from its Powder River Basin (PRB) operations increased to 12mst (short tons), up from 11.6mst in 2008. But sales from its Northern Appalachian unit were down slightly to 3.3mst from 3.4mst last year, while sales from Central Appalachian operations saw a sharper falll to 1.1mst, compared with 1.9mst in the same period last year, due in part to the absence of production from the idled Laurel Creek operation.
