Coal share meltdown continues in September

World coal shares had their worst month of the year in September, with US financial panic continuing to spook investors into comprehensively dumping their holdings and rushing to the perceived safety of cash. The sell-off ensured that the MCR coal equities compiled by Credit Suisse, had its worst month for the year, with not a single one of the near 50-strong list managing to gain ground. The wipe-out has now pushed the bulk of stocks into negative territory for the year so far - with several notable exceptions - and the same is true for the performance over the past 12 months.
