COAL generation COULD be boosted if increasing protests over two old French nuclear plants with a total 3GW of capacity lead to their early closure. In addition to protests from local residents, the French 1,300MW Cattenom nuclear power station, located 12km from the border with Germany, is now also being called on to improve safety by the governments of Luxembourg and the German states of Saarland and Rheinland Pfalz.
