US THERMAL COAL suppliers are barely turning a profit on new export business as weak global demand and falling prices, especially in Europe, dovetail with one of the worst domestic thermal coal markets for decades. "Comatose" was how one seasoned hand described the domestic market, which has suffered from 'perfect storm' conditions, namely: Much weaker overall electricity demand due to challenging economic conditions and a mild winter.
