Cote and Coking Coal Highlights

Both the coal and coke markets seem to be spiralling out of control. There is a genuine and global tightness in both of these markets. Coal is becoming more difficult to procure, which has helped push spot prices passed the 400 dollars/tonne mark. This is over 30 percent more than the contract prices which were agreed only three months ago. This is affecting the prices of coke which is also shooting up; in China it is above 700 dollars/ tonne, with no sign that this is going to come down. Demand is certainly being affected because of this, and this will continue for the foreseeable future.
