Since retiring I have been working with younger people, mostly ages 9-12. They tendto find long division boring, so I show them that long division is interesting by studyingrepeating decimals. Some good questions from the kids led me to look into the resultsin this paper. Most of the results are known—as noted in the history section at the endof this article—but they have not been readily accessible in a general form.
