National Update: A roundup of what's happening in the materials community around the country

The current and future state of Australian manufacturing continues to occupy a prominent position in the national conversation. On 18 August 2012, the non-government members of the Prime Minister's Taskforce on Manufacturing released a report entitled Smarter Manufacturing for a Smarter Australia. While acknowledging the challenges arising from the high Australian dollar, the strength of the resources boom, more intensive global and regional competition and the continuing fallout from the global financial crisis, the report makes it clear that Australian manufacturing can prosper and grow by taking advantage of significant emerging opportunities, especially in the Asian region.
