At a recent meeting in Adelaide, Alan J Broome, the chairman of Austmine announced to members that now is the time for Australian companies to invest in technological innovation. He reported that his discussions with the major mining companies had found that they all agreed that a new era in mining, the "Technology Age of Mining", would likely replace the "Boom Age of Mining" that we have recently seen come to a grinding halt. In the future, competitive advantage will come from technological innovation, smart systems and automation rather than capital investment in more labour and eguipment.
