摘要

Mining has to manage many hazards - very few industries deal with explosives, large machinery, high impact equipment, confined spaces, and all in an underground environment. Because many risks are present in mining, the industry goes to great lengths to ensure the safety of its workers. Any visit to a mine starts with a safety induction and, in the developed world, the industry is truly proud of its impressive risk management record. None more so than the Australian mining industry, which has been at the forefront of safety in mines. Since the 1970s, fatalities and lost time injury frequency rates (LTIFR) in the Australian mining industry have both shown a 9096 reduction. However, while accident rates are still declining, the rate of reduction is far less than in previous decades and appears to be reaching a plateau.
