Most successful organisations record their history land achievements at some point in their development. This book is the story of the formation and growth of the internationally renowned Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy at the University of Cambridge, UK. I had assumed that all science laboratories were provided by the university from the outset, so it was a surprise to learn that the origins of the department can be traced to a small chemistry laboratory set up by Sidney Sussex College in the mid-19th century. The move to become part of the university's chemistry department took place in 1910, and with support and several financial contributions from the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths, it grew to have its first chair in 1930. The first Part II exams were set in 1938, and eventually it broke free from chemistry and became a full department in its own right.
