The road to discovery

A copy of the book 'Polythene came from Cheshire' has kindly been donated by E. Raymond Ellis to the Institute's library in central London. At 85 years old, Ellis decided it was time to record the role of his colleagues and predecessors in the design and development of a sustainable production process for polythene. From 1946 to 1976, Ellis worked on the engineering challenges of producing the plastic using a high-pressure process that could operate at pressures of up to 2,000 standard atmospheres. His book is drawn from his personal experiences during this period.
