The official match football being used in this year's FIFA World Cup is made from 100 percent plastic. Manufactured by Adidas, the ball consists of 14 plastic panels that are glued together, leaving fewer seams on the surface. Adidas says the result is a rounder ball that performs more uniformly, regardless of where it is struck. The Sports Technology Research Group at Loughborough University, UK, conducted tests on the ball for Adidas. According to the results, the ball shows 'homogenous performance characteristics when playing in dry or wet conditions'.
