The purpose of this elegantly produced little book is to teach people with nominal chemistry knowledge how to identify pieces of metals and alloys, and their coatings. This includes identification of element species and alloy types, using physical examination (for example colour and sparking), chemical reaction (with inorganic and organic solutions) and electrography based around a chemistry laboratory with scales and beakers. This would be a very commendable aim indeed if it was well executed.
