This book is the first volume in the Engineering Materials and Processes series edited by Brian Derby (Manchester Materials Science Centre). The authors identify three methods for joining composites and dissimilar materials - mechanical fastening, (thermoset (TS)), adhesion bonding and (thermoplastic (TP)) fusion bonding. The first of these is dismissed owing to the holes and cut-outs required and the second due to high labour and surface preparation requirements together with unavoidable curing cycles. Fusion bonding is identified as having the advantages of short processing times, reduced surface preparation requirements, the absence of foreign material at the interface, the possibility of reprocessing to improve the joint quality.. or to perform a dc-montage operation... and the potential for online quality control'. Given that the glass transition temperature, Tg, for thermosets typically follows cure temperature, while in thermoplastics it is typically 200 deg C below the melt temperature, considerable energy savings could result from using bonding with TS rather than TP adhesives. Furthermore, the cooler TS bonding is less likely to degrade the adherend.
