This month marks the 33rd anniversary of the discovery of Bioglass, the first man-made material to bond to living tissue, by Professor Larry Hench FIMMM. Sarah Thomas Cleevely talks to the Imperial College professor about his latest work, his thoughts on the future direction of materials science and his latest international award, the 2003 Acta Materialia Inc J Herbert Holloman Award. How do you feel about receiving your latest honour, the 2003 Acta Materialia Inc J Herbert Holloman Award? Receiving an award named after Dr Holloman is very satisfying. The award encompasses a range of things I've done, including my work with bioactive materials and the safe disposal of high-level radioactive waste in glasses.
