Cancer is the second leading cause of death for Americans. According to the American Cancer Society's 2004 estimates, cancer of the colon and rectum is the third most common site of both new cancer cases and cancer deaths. Knowledge of risk factors for colorectal cancer could lead to better risk reduction strategies for asymptomatic individuals. Few studies have evaluated risk factors for advanced colorectal cancer in asymptomatic individuals, compared risk factor's between persons with and without polyps, or included most purported risk factors in a multivariate analysis. The aim of an investigation by Lieberman et al. was to determine the risk factors associated with advanced colorectal neoplasia in a cohort of asymptomatic persons with complete colonoscopy.
