Manufacturing change: industry heavyweights share strategies for troubled sector

It's time for Canada's manufacturing sector to play catch-up says a study by Grant Thornton LLP. The study - Manufacturing Insights 2006: A Global Vision -polled 1,635 senior executives of privately owned, mid-sized manufacturing operations in 22 different countries to gauge how Canada is measuring up internationally. Its results were recently presented to industry leaders. At the briefing, Jim Copeland, Grant Thornton's national leader of manufacturing and distribution, reported that Canadian manufacturers are facing a "perfect storm" of rising costs, shrinking profit margins, global competition, skill shortages and an appreciating dollar.
