摘要

The developing consensus on the need to reduce carbon emissions coupled with a diminishing supply of fossil energy sources drives the spread of alternative fuels such as gasohol - blends of gasoline and ethanol. However, widespread gasohol use in the Brazilian market has shown that even components made of stainless steel corrode much faster in gasohol than in pure gasoline or water. While corrosion mechanisms in aqueous solutions have been researched extensively, corrosion mechanisms in fuels containing ethanol have received less attention and are poorly understood. Aim of this thesis is to develop an understanding of the principle mechanism, by finding similarities and opposites between the two different corrosion environments aqueous solution and fuels containing ethanol.
