Innovative MAN Euro V Engines without Exhaust Aftertreatment

MAN Nutzfahrzeuge AG always aims to offer products on its respective markets that are economically interesting for its customers. These products therefore incorporate innovative technology that ensures maximum driving comfort and also guarantees compliance with statutory emission limits. For example, AdBlue-free technology was offered for all MAN series even before the EURO IV legislation came into force. This technology was based on an internal engine solution with external cooled EGR and a PM-Kat filter. This solution was extremely well-received by our customers since the known benefits did not result in any detrimental effects on operating costs compared with SCR technology. As a result of the early introduction of EURO V in some European countries due to road toll benefits, MAN Nutzfahrzeuge AG initially made use of its many years of experience with SCR technology, since the EURO V EGR solution described in detail in this paper was not yet available. The motivation for developing an AdBlue-free EURO V solution was the positive feedback from our customers based on the MAN EURO IV EGR/PM-Kat technology. The developed EURO V EGR solution makes it possible to realise other market-orientated EURO IV solutions for the so-called "emerging markets", and also allows us to offer technology without aftertreatment to customers all over the world. This technology represents the basis for a platform concept EURO IV/V and EURO VI, in which EURO IV can be realised without aftertreatment, EURO V in conjunction with an oxidation catalytic converter and EURO VI with an SCRT system. The vehicle/engine concept presented here focuses on the most important components for the individual model series that made it possible to achieve the EURO V objectives through internal engine measures. These measures do not have any negative impact on operating costs or service life compared with SCR technologies.
