The modular Mercedes-Benz hybrid system combines the hybrid transmission of the second generation as a parallel hybrid with the gasoline and diesel engines from the Mercedes Benz engine portfolio. Previous experience from the series development of full-hybrid systems with the 7G-TRONIC Plus automatic transmission and the consumption savings associated with this has revealed that although batteries with higher energy content allow an enhanced electric driving experience, they do not create any additional benefit from a consumption viewpoint. The regenerative braking capacity determines the optimum design of performance and energy capacity of the traction battery. Recharging through a combustion engine cannot compensate for the extra weight of the vehicle in the case of an oversized battery [1]. In the S500 Plug-In Hybrid, Mercedes-Benz has thus combined a battery with high energy content and the capability to recharge the energy reservoir via an external power supply. This brings together the advantages of zero emission electric driving and the tremendous consumption benefits of the parallel hybrid in perfect unison - with resultant unrivaled ride comfort and driving dynamics. This presentation will emphasize the unique characteristics of this efficient and dynamic hybrid drive by presenting its components and there integration into the vehicle while examining the system modularity. Afterwards the drive programs, the operation modes and the route-based operating strategy, which uses navigation data as an enabler for a predictive energy management, will be explained. The description of the operation strategy will reveal what lead to the consumption savings achieved. To conclude, will be examined with a look at the diverse applications.
