After months of speculation, the Supreme Court finally rendered its ruling, upholding the constitutionality of President Obama's overhaul of the financing of the nation's health care system. It could be the most significant expansion of access to health benefits since Medicare and Medicaid were enacted in 1965. And, despite debates about the Affordable Care Act, for those entrusted with the health care of our communities, the need for improved access is undeniable.The train, however, left the station long before the recent Supreme Court decision, and the way health care is accessed, marketed and communicated has forever changed. We are quickly transitioning from the fee-for-service, volume-based arena to one centered on value, where more of the payment is based on performance.
