Study of the aptitude for oversowing of perennial ryegrass cultivars.

In the Belgian Haute Ardenne, seedlings of 36 perennial ryegrass [Lolium perenne] cultivars of different maturity groups were sown in early September into a dense sward of red fescue [Festuca rubra] cv. Barnica sown in early August 1989. Assessmentof development and tillering in autumn and spring until May 1992 showed that cultivars differed significantly in vigour and competitiveness, the intermediate and late-maturing tetraploid cultivars being the most competitive and thus the most suitable foroversowing for grassland improvement.
