Novel toolmaking techniques, when combined with state-of-the-art 5-axis CNC machining and cutter tip technology, that is more typically associated with prismatic machining of aerospace components, have enabled viable and repeatable injection moulding tools to be manufactured for novel nano-coated polymer glazing panels for the automotive sector. Work to-date indicates that these new toolmaking techniques have the ability to reduce toolmaking time, improve off machine surface finish and accuracy suitable for optical quality applications. Furthermore, the level of technology is such that it is expected that new tooling metals will be developed specifically for this application.
