Finding your way through the maze: post 16 education for castings engineers

A glossary of terms is available via the Foundry Trade journal website (www.foundrytradejournal.com) which will explain some of the many acronyms and provides contact details for many of the organisations in the article. All those involved in the recruitment, mentoring and training of young engineers need to be aware of the full range of qualifications that are available today. Many of these qualifications now offer legitimate routes for engineers to achieve professional qualifications from Engineering Technician (Eng Tech) through to Chartered Engineer (CEng) and are increasingly tailored towards those wishing to follow a more vocational route to further and higher education. The UK government has recognised the need for skilled technicians and is trying to increase the number of young people remaining in education beyond the age of I6. At the same time there is a recognition that the more traditional or 'fast track' route to Chartered Engineer Registration, consisting of A levels followed by a three to four year full time degree course is not an option for all. Many of the newer qualifications are aimed at providing choice for the individual whilst delivering the skilled workforce that manufacturing requires.
