Automated fettling is here to stay

Invariably, the series manufacture of both iron and aluminium castings is now the province of automated moulding machines or diecasting systems which require minimal manual intervention. However, once the castings have emerged from the production line, the subsequent fettling operations are all too often labour intensive, with each component being individually deflashed and ground to remove extraneous metal, etc. Such operations are not only costly in terms of man hours, time, and power consumption, but can be environmentally unfriendly as far as noise, dust emission, and physical exertion are concerned. There is also no certainty that each component will not be over or under fettled.
