If reversible stunning methods like capitive bolt stunning are used, the killing of the animals occurs by immediate blood loss. Therefore the exsanguination plays a central role in the dying or slaughter process. Formerly the spinal cord was destroyed by a flexible plastic-staff, so it was impossible that there were a perception of nerval or painful signals at the brain. The VO 999/2001 from 1.1.2001 disables from using such a staff. The German "Tierschutzschlachtverordnung (TierSchV)" regulates further manipulations at the animals not until there are no noticeable movements. Our investigations indicate that this formulation may be not sufficient. It would be better to say "complete atony" as a clinical sign of death. This will be achieved in a time of 5 minutes after sticking (chest stick) and is clearly recognizable.
