Russia is one of leading producers of steel in the world. In latest years, Russia was traditionally the 4th greatest producer of steel in the world (after Chine, Japan and USA). But in 2009 most of country-steelmakers, except for China, India, Iran and some other sharply decreased steel output. On results of 2009, Russia became the 3rd greatest producer of steel in the world (after China and Japan), in 2010-2013, Russia became the 5th (after USA (the 3rd place) and India (the 4th) in addition), and South Korea on the 6th place became very close to Russia in steelmaking volume. India is actively developing its iron and steel industry in an effort to bring the production of steel in the long run to 200 million tons per year. Other country-producers of steel will hardly considerably increase the production. Therefore, even for the period up to 2020 in Russia, most likely, will be the fifth in the world for the production of steel.
