Schedule 4 of the Swiss Animal Protection Order lays down the minimum average space requirements for each animal in square metres. This article describes two stages in the development of space requirements for pigs and the reasons for the differences. An analysis of the space requirements for cattle shows the problematic nature of a classification according to weight for application by transport companies in day-to-day shipments. Its application in ordinary conditions is explained on the basis of a shipment of calves. A proposal for bovines is submitted based on the classification according to age normally applied in Switzerland..
