Comparative study was conducted to determine the efficacy of Rambach-, Xylo -Lysine-deoxycholate (XLD)-agar and Oxoid Salmonella Chromogenic-Medium. (OSCM) in detecting Salmonella in chicken pieces and to assess the growth characteristics of the most frequently isolated Salmonella sero types on the 3 plating media. Out of a total of 221 chicken pieces examined, 64 (28.95%) and 50 (22.62%) were found to be Salmonella positive on Rambach(R) and XLD agars, respectively. Oxoid Salmonella Chromogen Medium detected 49 (22.17%) of the sample as Salmonella positive. Rambach agar was more sensitive (100%) than XLD (78.13%) and OSCM (76.56%): The study with stock cultures of Salmonellae showed that all 3 selective media failed to detect S. indiana. Rambach and XLD revealed atypical colony growth with S. typhimurium and S. saint paul. Factors influencing the efficacy of the differential media is discussed and conclusion of practical importance drawn.
