The effects of occurrence of BSE in the USA and Canada on beef consumption in N. America is discussed. Topics considered include: closure of export markets; surplus beef on the domestic market; the relatively small impact on attitudes of USA and Canadian consumers to beef; impact on beef prices; differences between effects in the USA and Canada; future prospects; and effect of the export ban on beef prices in Japan and South Korea.
