Lean lessons for Australian SMEs

LEAN manufacturing has been the subject of a much discussion but many small and mid-sized firms have found the principles difficult to implement. There is, they say, a large gap between theory and real-world practice. A good attempt has been made to bridge that gap with a new book, Mr Lean Buys and Transforms a Manufacturing Company. The author, Greg Lane, studied the principles of lean manufacturing in Toyota, the source of much lean thinking, and applied them within Toyota's plants. But when he decided to buy and operate a small metal fabrication firm, he found there was a great deal more to learn, and the book is an account of the process.
