Slight contraction in US cattle herd; Commission proposal on food labelling; South American steer prices expected to continue to rise; Polish pig herd continues to decline; Japanese imports of ED pork unchanged: Japanese imports of pork from Europe were largely unchanged last year whilst non-EU countries increased their majority share of this key market according to data from Japan Customs. Japan is one of the world's largest importers of pork, and the country imported five per Cent more pork in total last year than in 2006. Consumption of pork in Japan runs at almost double the level of beef consumption, with domestic retail prices several times lower for pork than for beef.
