Exports to Italy rose by 50,000 head. In the early months of the year there was a good supply in France of male store cattle over 300kg, for which there was good demand in Italy. At that stage concern over avian 'flu was stimulating demand for red meat and as a result French exporters found a receptive market. The avian 'flu issue seems to have masked the impact of decoupling on fatteners in Italy.
