Why collect books few will rend? Libraries should reconsider buying practices

While most academic libraries focus their collecting on areas core to their curricula, they generally attempt to build collections that provide basic coverage in all areas, even those not taught at their institutions. Because of this, most general academic libraries tend to have sizeable collections of legal and medical materials, even when those subjects are covered on the same campuses by specialized libraries devoted to those subject areas.
