We have looked at issues which arise specifically in the context of a national library's digitisation project. National library digitisation projects aim to serve a number of purposes, leisure of course, enhancing cultural understanding and promotingcultural development, reinforcing the national identity, and also educational purposes. National libraries are not the only organizations making digitized materials available for educational purposes -universities and colleges etc of course are central in this area.
