Five papers are presented on the subject of plant protection in maize crops. The first provides details on 3 new herbicides for 1999, Eclat (bromoxynil + prosulfuron), Merlin (isoxaflutole) and Task (rimsulfuron + dicamba). Eclat is effective against annual broadleaved weeds, Merlin against cocksfoot [Dactylis glomerata] and dicotyledonous weeds, and Task against both monocotyledons and dicotyledons. The second paper discusses the use of tank mixtures or single herbicides in weed control in maize.The third paper discusses the handling requirements of maize herbicides with emphasis on the interaction between the product and the environment. The characteristics and handling requirements of 12 maize herbicides are tabulated including the effects ofthe soil, wax layer, temperature and humidity. The fourth and fifth papers discuss the early establishment of a weed control strategy from the perspective of northern and southern Germany.
