Comfort movements evolve into ritualized displays in the African elephant

Around 30,000 elephants lived in and around Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe, during the 1990s. No culling and little poaching had taken place there since the mid- 1980s and the animals were very relaxed. It seemed to be the ideal setting for a behavioral study of a wild population.
