Post-harvest evaluations of new cultivars In Nova Scotia

New cultivars which are gaining popularity in other apple regions have been planted in the Annapolis Valley of Nova Scotia by some apple growers. Some of the most promising cultivars - Jonagold, Gloster 69, Gala and Elstar - have been evaluated for post-harvest quality. Although these studies are currently being continued, we have two years of data for Jonagold and Gloster 69 (1991 and '92 harvests), and one year of data for Gala and Elstar (1992 harvest). Apples of each cultivar were harvested at optimum maturity for long-term storage. Bushel samples were stored for four and eight months at 0°C in ambient air, standard controlled atmosphere (SCA: 4.5 per cent CO_2, 2.5 per cent O_2) and low oxygen (LO: 1.5 per cent CO_2, 1.5 per cent O_2). The quality of the apples, weight loss and per cent marketable were determined after storage, as well as the identification of physiological disorders and diseases of high occurrence.
