Mixed reviews given on SDRM pilot project

Ontario will launch a two-year pilot for a self-directed risk management program for most horticultural crops for the 1996 and 1997 crop years. But it's a plan drawing mixed reviews. "I'm pleased we have delivered on our commitment to give thegrowers of horticultural crops the kind of flexibility they have been asking for with this self-directed risk management pilot, and be able to do so within the resources we've allotted in the existing safety net package," said Noble Villeneuve, Ontario's minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. "John Jaques and the Ontario Fruit and Vegetable Growers' Association are to be commended on their work in making sure this pilot program is available to Ontario growers."
