Research continues into cyclospora outbreak

Health Canada and Ontario public health officials and their U.S.. counterparts are continuing to probe this year's cyclospora outbreak originally linked to U.S. strawberries. However, a more recent media report suggested the problem may be tied to a raspberry crop in Central America. Cyclospora is a parasite that causes foodborne illness. The infection causes watery diarrhea, fatigue, abdominal pain and loss of appetite. Symptoms can last from nine to 4.3 days. An advisory issued late last month by Dr. Richard Schabas, Ontario's chief medical officer of health, said investigation of the Ontario outbreaks suggests that exposure to the parasite occurred in May and early June.
