Note on Mycoblastus fucatus [=M. sterilis] (Lichenes, Mycoblastaceae) from Poland

During a study of some sterile lichens from the Beskid Sadecki Mts, it was found that Pertusaria chloropolia auct. polon. (=P. chloropolia Erichsen according to Nowak and Tobolewski 1979) is a synonym of Mycoblastus fucatus (Stirton) Zahlbr. (=M. sterilis Coppins & P. James) which has not been reported from Poland till now. Mycoblastus fucatus and especially its sterile, mainly corticolous, form known as M. sterilis is a widespread lichen species and is known to occur in many European countries. Thespecies, once recognised, appears to be common, even in polluted areas as it is known to be a toxitolerant lichen. M. fucatus, however, like some other lichens having sterile forms, is poorly known in some areas and often misidentified or overlooked, This is probably why the species is not on local checklists of lichens (although it could be recorded under a different name).
