Phylogenetic and taxonomic studies of Jungermanniidae, III. Calypogeiaceae

The intrageneric taxonomy of Calypogeiaceae is re-examined, utilizing criteria heretofore not subject to critical analysis, i.e.,: branching, presence vs. absence of microphyllous flagella, oil-bodies, stem anatomy degree of elaboration of gynoecial branches, asexual reproduction or its absence, pigmentation, and other criteria. With utilization of a modern approach to genera it is shown: (1) Calypogeia Raddi must be narrowly circumscribed to groups in which terminal branching is (at least incipiently) preserved, in which oil-bodies are botryoidal, and leaves never margined, (2) Mnioloma Herz. is a valid group, and Calypogeia subg. Caracoma Bischler (1963) must be assigned to it. All members of Mnioloma s. lat. lack asexual reproduction and terminalbranching; all have underleaves with the incipient lobes (reduced to hyaline papillae) juxtaposed; all have granular-botryoidal, relatively smooth oil-bodies and stems with a ± differentiated cortex. (3) Metacalypogeia (Hatt.) Inoue, currently composedof three subgenera (Metacalypogeia, Eocalypogeia, Furukia) is restricted to the nominal subgenus Furukia and Eo-calypogeia are regarded as subgenera of a genus Eocalypogeia (Schust.) Schust., differentiated by a series of plesiomorphic features; (a) Bazzania-like furcate branching; (b) relatively unreduced sexual branches; (c) inability to form gemmae; (d) granular-botryoidal oil-bodies. In the last two criteria Eocalypogeia, with gynoecia on ± leafy branches and with ovoid rather than cylindrical capsules, is regarded as the least apomorphic genus.
