Habitat variability of the phytocoenoses of Elodeetum canadensis in north-eastern Poland

A comparative analysis of the habitats of Elodeetum canadensis (Pign.) Pass 1964 phytocoenoses from lakes and astatic bodies of water within north-eastern Poland was performed. It was demonstrated that the phytocoenoses investigated in both types of habitat are distinct with respect to ecology. The waters of astatic bodies of water are shallower, softer and poorer in Ca, Mg, dissolved SiO_2 and SO_4, but richer in PO_4-P, Na, total Fe and NO_3-N than those of lakes. The substrates from astatic bodiesof water are more acidic and poorer in Ca and Mg and markedly richer in NO_3-N In view of the fact that Elodea canadensis Michx. grows more rapidly and flowers abundantly in astatic bodies of water, these types of habitat are recognized as optimal for the development of Elodeetum canadensis.
