Fissidens (Musci, Fissidentaceae) in Vanuatu (New Hebrides) collected by Dr. M. Higuchi

Fifteen species of Fissidens are reported from Vanuatu (=New Hebrides) F subsca-bridens Broth & Watts is reduced to synonymy off hollianm Doz, & Molk The occurrence of F. bogoriensis Fleisch, in the flora of the islands is doubtful. A dichotomous keyto species is provided. Vanuatu (New Hebrides), located northeast of New Caledonia and west of Fiji, is a group of islands in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. The bryophytes of these islands have been reported previously by Brotherus and Watts (1915), Theriot (1937), Tixier (1974). Of the approximately 215 species of mosses so far reported from this area, only four species of Fissidens, i.e., F. subscabrisetus Broth. & Watts (Brotherus & Watts 1915), F. subacutissi-mus Ther. (Miller et al. 1978), F. sylvaticus Griff. (Tixier 1974) and F, zippelianus Doz. & Molk, (Theriot 1937) were included. It is worth noting that the specimens of F. sylvaticus and F, zippelianus probably represent a single species. Dr. M. Higuchi, during January 1992, collected 577 specimens of bryophytes mainly on Mt Pic Santo, Espiritu Santo Island (15°32'S, 166°48'E) and on Efate Island (17°35'S, 168°18'E), among which were 30 collections of Fissidens, representing 1.5 species. All specimens have been deposited in HIRO.
