Manufacturing, our future - MTA president stresses the importance of manufacturing, science, technology and apprenticeships

Geoff Lloyd - managing director of the machine tool manufacturer Heller UK, and president of the Manufacturing Technologies Association (Tel: 020 7298 6400) - is passionate about manufacturing and its importance to the UK, both socially and economically. He also 'has engineering in his blood': he was born in Birmingham (the heartland of British manufacturing) and his father started an engineering company, but his passion for manufacturing is certainly not based on some 'idyllic' view of his younger days. During his many years in manufacturing and the machine tool industry, he has not only travelled widely in the industrialised world and seen what factors generate success; he has also worked in other countries. As a result, he considers himself qualified to pass comment on all aspects of manufacturing, plus the associated education and training needed to support this key activity.
