Choosing The Right Tubing

For some glass shops, flexible tubing is not a big issue. At the Savannah River National Laboratory, it is, however, as pressure ratings and compatibility are a must. We had been using the color-coded twin overbraid tubing which is lightweight and very flexible with a maximum pressure rating of 25 psi; this pressure rating had become an issue due to the fact that some of our pressure relief valves were set above 25 psi. One option was the Grade T welding tubing. This tubing is heavy and stiff but has a pressure rating of 200 psi. (Please note that Grade T is for multiple gas usage which includes hydrogen, propane, natural gas, MAPP gas and acetylene. Grade R & RM are for acetylene use only). This tubing works well for stationary burners, but does not provide the type of flexibility needed for a hand torch.
