Press line automation - Major UK processor addresses important safety issues - and reduces costs

Operator safety is a critical consideration for any company running power press equipment. However, when the UK steel processor Steel & Alloy Ltd selected the Telford-based system integrator Transicon (Tel: 01952 605515) to update the control system on one of its press lines, it not only increased safety but also improved throughput and reduced costs. Formed in the late 1960s, West Bromwich-based Steel & Alloy has grown to become the largest independent processor of automotive steel in the UK. The company sources metal from all over the world and currently handles more than 300,000 tonnes of steel annually. It is also an approved processor for both Arcelor and Corus within the UK automotive sector. Steel & Alloy's two West-Midlands sites offer more than 200,000ft{sup}2 of processing and storage facilities, and they house a wide variety of production equipment, including slitting, blanking, press working, shearing, washing and oiling plant.
